The Difference Between Self-Discovery and Self-Healing
It turns out that putting your eyeballs on something and actually fixing it, are not the same thing.
I used to journal endlessly on all the things that were wrong with my life, because I believed that by taking a microscope to all the piles of shit that existed in my life I could somehow make them go away.
So every morning I'd wake up early, grab my trusty journal and my favorite pen and write down all the reasons why I did what I did back then, and why all the other people in my life did what they did to me.
For a while, I'd feel a little better after my morning journaling sessions. But then I realized that all the journaling I'd done hadn't made a meaningful change in the painful emotions I felt around those old memories. And it definitely hadn't done anything to change the compulsion I felt to repeat the same kinds of problematic choices that got me into that problematic situation in the first place.
It wasn't until I realized that there's a big difference between self-discovery and self-healing, and understanding why the people who hurt me did what they did, doesn't do anything to stop me from feeling hurt about it now.
